Eve Online Starter Guide
Eve Online Starter Guide
The first thing you need to do is to download the client and apply for a 14 day free trial account since there is no point in playing a game you dislike or wasting those precious two weeks when you can get a freebie. There are some limitations with the trial account but not enough to prevent you getting a real 'feel' for the game mechanics and certainly the two weeks is enough time to decide if you like the game or not.
Alternatively, take the plunge and sign up for a full account right away and never be limited to what you can do ingame.
Downloading the EVE Client
Download the EVE client from this link:
http://www.eve-online.com/download/
Save it somewhere that you can easily find it (like your desktop) and then run the application to install EVE. If you get a "file corrupted" message, you may need to free more space on your hard drive.
Patching and the AutoPatcher
The client you download should be the latest build. If for some reason it is not, we recommend that you patch the client manually rather than autopatching. Download the latest patch here:
http://www.eve-online.com/patches/patches.asp
Unzip the file and then launch the .exe within when EVE is not running.
Obtaining a Free Trial Account
You can get a 14-day free trial and help Solar Sentinel at the same time! Use this link to sign up:
https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=105964
Or, if you're ready to purchase an account, use this link:
https://secure.eve-online.com/cklregister.aspx
Each new account generates a commission for Solar Sentinel, which can then be legitimately turned into in-game currency and used to finance our efforts.
The trial account is fully functional, with a few exceptions. Some skills cannot be trained on trial accounts, and money cannot be transferred from trial accounts to other accounts. Beyond that, you can do anything that a paid account can do. Please note that if you decide to purchase the game, your trial period ends immediately, so you might wish to wait until your trial account is about to expire, and then pay, to get the maximum amount of free playtime. If you apply a timecode your trial period will remain i.e. if you applied a 30 day card 5 days into your trial you would have 39 days of account available.
Character Creation
Once your account has been setup, it's time to log in and head to the character creation screen. Basically, you would want to build up your character according to its role, and there are a few options available. First off, you can have a well rounded character with all stats having a similar level, a build which is good for profession switching later in the game, recommended if you are new and undecided.
As a rule of thumb, traders require a lot of Charisma and Willpower; fighters generally rely on Perception and Willpower, while haulers, miners, scientists and tanker types absolutely need Intelligence and Memory.

Designing Your Portrait
The visual design aspect of character creation in EVE is absolutely fantastic. You have the ability to create a truely beautiful character. Unfortunately, with all the intricate details at your finger tips, to the inexperienced, or those in a rush, this can spell disaster. Since developing a character in EVE requires real time, rather than buckling down and grinding, you're going to be in it for the long-haul if you decide to stick around, and you don't want the weight of an ugly face on your shoulders.

Basic Character Builds
As of the Apocrypha expansion all characters start with the same attributes and skillpoints, the following changes were also made:
- New characters now train at double speed until they reach 1.6 million skill points.
- New characters are provided with two Neural Remaps (Restats), after using both a restat will not be available until one year after their expenditure, these allow you to pick your initial attributes to match a chosen profession.
- All races now start with the same basic skillset which is supplemented by level 2 in their racial frigate and level 3 in their corresponding small turret skill.
- Bloodlines and Careers no longer provide any bonus to attributes or skills and are now treated as facial variations and flavor text respectively.
Because of this it is recommended that you choose a character that you like the look of, regardless of race or bloodline - and pick any career. It takes a very short amount of time to train another race's frigate and small turret skills to the same levels.

Learning Skills
Your Skill Points (SP) determine the limits of your character’s abilities in Eve. You can own 10,000,000,000 isk in ships and modules and be totally unable to fly or use them properly if you don’t have the required skills.
This guide will hopefully explain how 'leveling up' works in EVE, through use of skills and skill points. If all of this is too much for you, hopefully you at least retain the knowledge/reminder from this guide to always keep your clone upgraded as to not actually lose skill points throughout the course of your life in EVE

Recommended Skill Training
This is a basic guide, that should give you a good set of recommendations on what skills to train for your first week or so of EVE. Treat it as a checklist -- if something's listed here, and you don't have it, consider training it, in roughly the priority listed.
